Cute dog running back and forth

2005 Success Stories

12/20/05 - Charlie, our little bassett, was adopted on Saturday! Juliana, who had taken him in for foster - had him at her shop on Saturday and met a wonderful family with 2 kids and another dog (he LOVES to play with other dogs). They talked at length, and off he went to Palmdale. I will do a follow-up call this week - and hope there are no problems. They know that if it doesnt' work out for any reason, they are to bring him back. Thanks Juliana!

Deb

Before... After...

Click see her story.

Hope, the abandoned and very sick dog that NPLH helped, found a home with a friend/neighbor of the woman who was fostering her - easy transition for our Hope. She's well loved and getting stronger and healthier every day.

11/4/05 - Flag went to live on 10 acres in Cambria with 4 other dogs? Sounds lin heaven to me. Thanks to Juliana for fostering her for so long!

Deborah

10/14/05 - Annie went to her new home on Wednesday. She's doing very well in her new home, with her 2 new baby brothers (1 year old lab pups)

10/17/05 - Lucky (aka Ilean) was adopted two weeks ago by a family with four children. Mom was reluctant to bring another animal into the house because that cat they had raised from a kitten and the dog they had adopted from the animal shelter last year were not getting along. The cat picked on the dog, so the dog was have some discipline issues because of it.

I received a call from the Mom last week expressing how Lucky had been a Godsend. She had somehow smoothed things out between the current dog and cat. It's all good at the Allen house.

Lucky had/has a broken back leg that wasn't set correctly and so healed wrong. She limped for a while on it. My husband jokingly called her Ilean (what do you call a woman with one leg shorter than the other? Ilean). The name stuck with her adopting family and thus her new name Ilean. You actually cannot tell now that she ever had an injury.

Another happy ending.

Kathy

10/4/05 - Kasy, our 11 year old dobie girl, has been adopted!!! While NPLH didn't directly find her the home, Christine (from Pismo Vet) who was the one who contacted us when the owner's family brought her in to be put down, called to thank us for our help. She said that had she not called NPLH and felt encouraged that Kasy could be re-homed, they most likely would have put her down.

Very cool!!!

10/3/05 - Buttons (now Toby) was adopted over the weekend - GREAT home, with nephews (4&7)that visit alot - they're in love with him - and he'll now be an indoor dog! What a sweetie.

10/3/05 - Lucky the kitten was also adopted - doing well in her new home.

9/26/05 - Hi Deborah, Jetta was at his first class of dog school this evening. It was quite an experience for both of us! A bit of past background with Dobies was very helpful for me as a reminder that that they are very smart and very stubborn - but do recognize when the person on the other end of the leash has "been there, done that", so I'm sure he'll respond to some consistent training and exposure to lots of other dogs and people. He's really very calm in the house (except at feeding time - understandable as he tries to convince us on a daily basis that he is on the edge of starvation), has his box of toys and pays little attention to things that aren't his possessions.

It's a beautiful sight to watch him run in the yard - full speed from one end to the other and back again for at least four or five laps and then he's ready to collapse and sleep on the grass, stretched out on his stomach with his back legs extended behind him. Larry has taken some pictures that I will forward to you.

Thanks!!!!

9/22/05 - "Shilo" the adult male Malamute mix. Another sucessful adoption by the NPLH volunteers!! Shilo found his soul mate "Cassidy" a frisky female Malamute companion that lives in Arroyo Grande, Calif. and they are living "happily ever after" with their kind human friend, Dale.

9/23/05 - Hi Kathy, Sorry it’s taken me so long to share these with you - I thought I’d send you a couple of pictures of Cody (taken in Feb 2005). He’s doing great and we love him so much.

He really turned out to be a great dog! And he’s super smart.

The cats he lives with definitely left their impression on him. He likes to get on top of the couch and lay there, just like the cats do. If he could, he’d nap with them on the kitty condo too.

Anyway, I will send other pictures while he grows and gets into mischief.

Have a good day,

Cathy

9/15/05 - Update on Roxy from Art and Gustine. This is Roxy (on the left) with her new buddy Bub.

9/9/05 - Hi Deborah, Thought you'd enjoy some new pictures of Kai - though, at the advice of our Doberman breeder friend who has placed relocated Dobies with us in the past, we changed his name. It's his opinion that when the dog's life is completely discombobulated (do you suppose that is really a word?) with different rules, boundaries and people, changing the name seems to make the transition easier. So, when we need to get his immediate attention, he's JET. When we just want to chat, he's Jetta.

His surgery is scheduled for September 21 and I'll send the papers to you when that is complete. He's also enrolled in dog school and, to help him along, we've been working on leash manners. He knows what's expected of him - learned that fast - but can be distracted, so we've been walking for about 20 minutes twice a day. The "sit" business has always been a rule with us as nothing great happens unless the dog's bottom is on the floor. That's to go in and out of doors, to get a treat, to begin a play time, to meet people, to get fed dinner, etc. No surprise that it's the first thing learned and almost never forgotten, no matter how excited the dog might be.

Our neighbors have all met him - and that includes a bunch of kids. They loved Jaxon (our big red Dobie who passed away in April at age 14) and this fellow is equally gentle with kids and knows how to hold still when the smallest ones are saying hello.

His house manners are coming along just fine. He knows the toys and things that are his and those that are ours. In fact, we brought him inside the first night he was with us and he seemed to figure out pretty fast that lights out mean bed time. If he wasn't house broken, he did that himself, though we do move him in and out of the house many times during the day so he gets the idea that both places are desirable. He loves the big back yard and runs as fast as he can go from end to end (it's about 100 feet - so he can get up to full speed), races around a huge old pepper tree and hurls himself back across the yard. We've left him alone in the house for short periods of time and he must have spent most of the time on his bed as nothing was out of place.

Needless to say (though I will anyhow) we are very pleased with him and feel that he enjoys himself here. He's a smart fellow and he knows how to work the system to his advantage. That's a Dobie! I hope there are many stories like ours. Our so called "rescue" or "relocated" pets have always been a bit of a challenge, but are so very rewarding to have in our lives. Linda

9/3/05 - Tanner is doing GREAT in his new home out near Pozo! Owner is retired and an avid golfer (my kinda guy) - Tanner will be learning how to play golf soon (I may need to get some tips from him) - or at the very least how to ride around in the golf cart out at Chalk Mountain!

9/2/05 - Cheetah was adopted (Grier took him to ASD on Friday to have him checked by Dr. Anderson) - a woman was there looking for a playmate for her dog, and voila!!! A match!

8/22/05 - Dear Deborah, I have great news, Roxy is doing great and all the dogs are getting along. She even made friends with grumpy old buster. I put the dogs to bed last night about 10:00 pm. and to my amazement we didnt hear a peep until 8:45 am. I am so glad that any of the problems that I concieved may happen have not materialized. She is a very pleasant dog. There was some wild indian behavior, jumping up and play nipping, but after the initial excitement she calmed right down.Shes a very lovy dog and seems to be doing just fine. Shes been chewing on the rawhides that the other dogs have been working on a nd left in the yard.Even Bub gave her a rawhide that he had softened up a bit,she took it right out of his mouth and he gave it up without ahint of agression.Right now its late afternoon doggie nap time. She ran around then took a nap inthe shade. The dogs always sleep in the late afternoon,so theyre all snoozing till dinner time. I just wanted to let u know that she seems to fit right in. Bye for now,I'll give u another update in a few days.

Thanks for everything,God Bless,Art in Gustine.

8/30/05 - Just sending a few pics of a dog, Shade, that was recently adopted - one of those "perfect" dogs (He was found running on the highway in Paso - was picked up by a woman who works at Happy Tails - and she called us!) - he's being fostered by Michele - we didn't do a flyer on him because I called some people who contacted me about a month ago wanting a lab or lab mix - and Shade was it!!! They came the very same day I called them, and will be taking him to his new home as soon as they are back from New York after Labor Day!!!
